WiMAX
WiMAX is a whole new generation of wireless network promising greater range, lower cost and higher speeds than today’s networks.
WiMAX provides the capability for a range of services including data, voice, gaming and multimedia to be offered to large subscriber bases over a single IP-based network in a cost effective and high performance way.
It is this flexibility which makes WiMAX appropriate for a diverse range of applications from mobile voice through to last-mile data links for business and residential use. The development roadmap for customer equipment sees the WiMAX and Wi-Fi chipset merging in 2008, which means that ultimately a large range of equipment will ship with WiMAX capabilities built-in, building a huge addressable market of connected devices.
With a large number of trials and early deployments underway (including “pre-WiMAX” deployments using similar technologies), WiMAX is already a reality and an exciting opportunity.
