Quiconnect appoints FreeRADIUS founder, Alan DeKok, as chief scientist

March 19, 2007 - Quiconnect, a specialist systems integrator offering interconnectivity services in the wireless broadband sector, today announces that it has appointed the founder and project leader of FreeRADIUS, Alan DeKok, as its chief scientist, effective immediately.

Mr. DeKok is one of the world’s leading experts in RADIUS[1] and will help to oversee Quiconnect’s software development process and technical team, future design of its Interconnect Platform, as well as create and bring to market new solutions to enable carrier and network operator interoperability, based on IETF[2] and WiMAX standards.  He will continue to have active managerial involvement in the FreeRADIUS project, an industry leading open source RADIUS server.

Quiconnect supplies the tools, technologies and services to enable the world’s leading service providers and network operators to offer their customers the ability to roam reliably and easily on different public WLAN networks, along with competitively priced, branded user experiences across these multiple networks, platforms and applications.  This is achieved in part through RADIUS server integration between the various service providers and network operators globally who are connected to the Quiconnect platform.  Given the importance of this to provide service availability to customers, the appointment of Mr. DeKok is significant given he is an authority in this area, with over a decade of networking, application development and RADIUS expertise.

Created in 1999, FreeRADIUS is the world’s number one RADIUS server with over 100,000 deployments of the software, including tier 1 ISPs and telecommunications companies.  With significantly more features compared to commercial RADIUS solutions, it provides organisations considerable flexibility supporting all commercial databases and a variety of platforms.  According to a survey carried out in November 2006 by FreeRADIUS, more than 100 million Internet users are authenticated via FreeRADIUS.

Commenting on why he joined the company, Alan DeKok, explains, “Quiconnect has a world class engineering team, a track record of success working with leading telecoms companies and great commercial potential. Its focus utilising RADIUS marries with my skill set in this area which we will certainly be leveraging moving forward.”

Troy Simoni, Quiconnect’s chief executive officer, says, “I’m personally delighted to welcome Alan DeKok into Quiconnect’s already distinguished leadership team.  As the world’s pre-eminent expert on RADIUS and a participant on standards bodies for other networking protocols, Mr. DeKok will ensure Quiconnect maintains and extends its current leading position in WLAN roaming to also include handheld wireless device access on Wi-Fi and WiMAX networks.”

Mr. DeKok is a regular participant and contributor at IETF meetings, an accomplished speaker, and has published numerous papers on RADIUS related issues. He has a Master’s degree in Physics from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada.

[1]Remote Authentication Dial In User Server is the most common protocol for network access. Most ISPs require users to enter a user name and password to connect to the Internet.  Before access is granted, this information is passed to a Network Access Server and then to a RADIUS server.  If details are correct, the user will be provided access to the ISP, and details of when the session started and stopped will be logged so that the user can be billed accordingly.
