China Telecom expands global Wi-Fi reach selecting Quiconnect to establish international bilateral wireless broadband agreements
March, 2009 - Quiconnect today announces that it has been selected by China Telecom Corporation Limited to establish bilateral wireless broadband roaming agreements with the world's leading telecom and network operators, to expand Wi-Fi services for customers travelling internationally, along with increasing coverage and access for visitors into China.
With 40.76 million broadband and 214.29 million fixed line subscribers today, China Telecom is the country's largest wireline telecoms and broadband provider delivering triple play services in 21 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions in China. With total operating revenues of RMB 178,656 million (approximately £14 billion), growth in broadband usage is rapidly increasing with the company adding 7.33 million customers in 2007 and revenue from Internet access services, in the same period, increasing 32.1%.
Quiconnect has extensive experience and a proven track record working with service providers and network operators globally to make access to hotpot infrastructure quick and easy for a people using a range of Wi-Fi enabled devices. Since active interconnections commenced in 2001, numerous telecoms companies have linked to its platform including BT, Sprint Nextel, SFR, VSNL, Telecom Italia, Telefónica, as well as WLAN network operators such as VEX, Hub Télécom, Naxos, Meteor, Kubi Wireless, Internet Solutions, and PT Wi-Fi.
Far more than its regional competitors, China Telecom is investing heavily in growing its WLAN network to extend broadband services to subscribers while they are on the move and away from their offices or homes. As of November 2007, the company had a hotspot estate of 10,000 sites, with this expected to grow to 25,000 by the year end, making it one of the largest WLAN networks in the world.
With the main concentration of hotspots in the south and southwest of China, particularly in the centralised costal areas of Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Guangdong province, China Telecom provides WLAN access at key hotels, airports, entertainment and business areas, with its national WLAN AAA centre based in Shanghai.
This investment in WLAN infrastructure complements China Telecom's recently announced purchase of China Unicom Limited's CDMA operation, network and subscribers, a deal made public in June 2008. Moving forward, this means services based on both CDMA and Wi-Fi will be offered to deliver mobile-based services to subscribers.
Jeff Mabe, Quiconnect's vice president, sales and marketing, says, "We will energise the whole process of connecting China Telecom to international service providers and network operators via our platform, thereby removing that operational overhead for them. Clearly we're delighted to have been chosen to facilitate this important role given China Telecom is the country's premier operator."
Quiconnect will be delivering all the RADIUS integration work to allow China Telecom's subscribers to roam easily outbound onto other operators' infrastructure, with their customers in turn then able to access China Telecom's WLAN network. Initially, the focus will be on establishing connections with companies in key European countries, along with Japan and the USA.
