Quiconnect facilitates bilateral WLAN interconnect services for Sprint and The Cloud working with RoamPoint
- Agreement will enable Sprint’s corporate customers access to 7,000 high quality hotspots run by Europe’s biggest provider, The Cloud
- Contract another demonstration of Quiconnect’s rapid expansion of Sprint’s WLAN coverage in Europe
- Deal is the first significant contract signed by RoamPoint with a USA carrier
As part of the strategy to broaden Sprint’s European WLAN presence, Quiconnect has signed a bilateral access and interconnect services agreement with RoamPoint to give Sprint’s corporate customers access to The Cloud’s 7,000 high quality hotspot locations in the UK, Germany and Sweden. These include prestigious sites such as Canary Wharf, The British Library, Coffee Republic, The South Bank Centre, 200 German hotels, Agip Service Stations, and 46 major train stations in Sweden.
US-based telecommunications giant, Sprint (NYSE: S), chose Quiconnect in April 2005 to act as its European partner to establish wider WLAN access for Sprint customers as they travel globally and need to log onto the Internet, and to access email and corporate systems.
Mark Brigman, Sprint’s WLAN business development manager, says, “Working with Quiconnect, we are making great strides in capturing more footprint to offer to our customers. Clearly they see huge value in having more and more choices of where they can get Internet access and the new deal with The Cloud only serves to enhance our ability to serve customers better.”
This year, Quiconnect has signed agreements with among others, Hub Télécom (formerly ADP Télécom) and PT Wi-Fi, part of Portugal Telecom Group, to create a Sprint-branded virtual WLAN network managed by Quiconnect irrespective of the countries visited, carriers or network operators used. The new contract with RoamPoint is a further extension of this and is effective immediately. The first phase of the project will involve Sprint accessing The Cloud’s hotspot locations with sites expected to become ‘live’ beginning in February 2006 and throughout the year.
The Cloud is the largest supplier of hotspot locations in Europe and the market leader in the UK. On average, it adds 100 new locations every week in the markets it serves. RoamPoint is an independent division of The Cloud offering WLAN managed authentication and interconnectivity services.
Serving 96% of the Fortune 500 companies, Sprint has been developing its Wi-Fi presence extensively in the USA at marquee venues - high value, high traffic locations - such as hospitals, convention centres and, most importantly, 8 key airports across America.
Andrew Schultz, Quiconnect’s head of marketing and strategy, says, “This is a bilateral deal where everyone wins, particularly the customer. Sprint has access to The Cloud footprint while RoamPoint wins its first major USA carrier. Ultimately, we are adding loads more hotspots for Sprint customers travelling in Europe and making it far easier for people to access WLAN sites on the move by simplifying the connectivity process.”
